IMAP/POP3/SMTP Issues Caused by Load

Hello,

My clients and I are unable to access email over IMAP/POP3 or even send emails at some times of the day. I've reported this issue a lot of times but the only answer I get is "It was a temporary issue, the services are running fin on the server".

I did some server load logging for the past few days and I concluded that every time my clients complain is because the load on the server is something like 50 and it's refusing connections.

On Outlook this issue appears as the program asking for password, on OSX/iOS Mail app it just says it can't connect to the server.

Since my clients complains and load spikes happen at the same time I think the high load is causing the server to refuse connections...

Anyone had this issues before? This is really annoying and at least one guy is talking about moving out.

Server: foxtrot.

Downtime on eleven2 could be prevented.

If you're finding you're experiencing more downtime that you should, your IP could be getting temporarily banned.

I've tried to have conversations about these latest strands of temporary bans with eleven2. There is definitely over-zealous security settings.

The problem is misconfiguring of their server firewall software. Support has blamed this on "shared hosting" needing stricter security, but their settings are way way too strong.

Here is an example of a block from their logs: (I've masked my IP with XXX)

====
/etc/csf/csf.tempban:1359126741|107.XXX.XXX.XXX||inout|1800|lfd - (CT) IP 107.XXX.XXX.XXX (US/United States/c-107-XXX-XXX-XXX.hsd1.tn.comcast.net) found to have 31 connections
====

The software they are using is called CSF or ConfigServer Scripts and Firewall. It comes as part of WHM/cPanel. http://www.configserver.com/cp/csf.html

Now most single webpages you have open will only have 2 connections at a time running in serial, but there are a number of things that can take this number up quickly. Multiple windows, FTP connections, asynx ajax calls, flash image galleries etc can easily open more than 30 connections for a single IP. My recommendation in the mean time. If you intend to use FTP, close all other windows to your eleven2 account.

Currently eleven2 (Sandy A. in particular) recommends that if you need more than 30 concurrent connections, easily reachable by a small image gallery, you should upgrade to their VPS service.

Now for the documentation.

Here is the unmodified instructions from the CSF config file:

###############################################################################
# SECTION:Connection Tracking
###############################################################################
# Connection Tracking. This option enables tracking of all connections from IP
# addresses to the server. If the total number of connections is greater than
# this value then the offending IP address is blocked. This can be used to help
# prevent some types of DOS attack.
#
# Care should be taken with this option. It's entirely possible that you will
# see false-positives. Some protocols can be connection hungry, e.g. FTP, IMAPD
# and HTTP so it could be quite easy to trigger, especially with a lot of
# closed connections in TIME_WAIT. However, for a server that is prone to DOS
# attacks this may be very useful. A reasonable setting for this option might
# be around 300.
#
# To disable this feature, set this to 0
CT_LIMIT = "300"

I certainly wouldn't fault them for lowering the limit from 300 for shared hosting, but 30?

Plus the could set a connection limit so a user can't get more than X number, rather than banning them for trying. This setting is called CONNLIMIT You can read about it here... http://configserver.com/free/csf/readme.txt

Other less quality hosts don't have this strict of a setting.. For instance:

Godaddy's economy hosting allows for 150 concurrent connections: http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/5089/why-is-my-site-displaying-a-quot503-service-temporarily-unavailablequot-error

I urge eleven2 to reconsider this setting. 30 creates too many false positives.

Ok, so there's not really a 'general support' forum here but I'm on shared hosting with you guys so I might as well post it here.

Anyway, I'm having trouble accessing my site (Front and backend), strange thing is, it's only affecting my site from home. I can visit it perfectly fine on any other computer/tablet/mobile thats not connected to my home internet connection. I've accessed it from work and have checked there was no IP block in the .htaccess but I haven't changed that for months(It only started on Sunday that I noticed), and my control panel doesn't have anything that stands out saying my home internet would be blocked.

I'm almost tearing my hair out since I post an article on my site weekly. I could just switch to another internet connection to post but I want my reliable home network back!

If anyone has had a similar experience or knows how to fix it then I'd like to hear from you, otherwise it's going to be very hard for me to do anything..
